There are so many things to drink to in this world, so why are most video power hours just a bunch of loosely-related music videos or TV / movie clips? Here are some topic/theme ideas that could shake things up!
1. CUTE POWER HOUR
A collection of the most adorable video clips out there — kittens and puppies, laughing babies, adorable Sesame Street clips, anything from Cute Overload… An hour that will make you feel all warm and happy inside!
2. REALITY TV POWER HOUR
Clips from the last decade’s biggest media sensation: trashy reality TV shows. The most memorable moments, like Sue Hawk’s “Rat and Snake” speech from the finale of Survivor season 1; Screech freaking out on Celebrity Fit Club; Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne throwing a ham over their neighbors’ fence on The Osbournes; that crazy religious woman’s tirade on Wife Swap; the big reveal on Joe Schmoe; or any clip from Kid Nation. This could be a truly incredible hour.
3. COVER SONG POWER HOUR
Music videos, but only cover versions by the artists that didn’t make them famous. This could include a lot of Internet celebrities, because song covers (by beatboxing flute players, or goons on ukuleles) are so huge on YouTube.
4. MICROWAVE POWER HOUR
Each minute features a different item getting microwaved: CDs, Furbies, grapes, Tickle-Me-Elmos. This wouldn’t be a video compilation, but rather something you’d have to shoot. Microwave all of these things for real and watch them burn / explode!
5. PRO WRESTLING POWER HOUR
Pro wrestling has so many incredible moments: death defying stunts, awesome music videos / intros, shit talking before matches, backstage antics, and so much kitsch it’s incredible. I’m just picturing all the classic matches (ie: Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant for the WWF title; Undertaker vs. Mankind in the first ever Hell in a Cell match; Edge & Christian vs. the Hardy Boyz in a ladder match), the drama (the nWo; Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon); as well as all of the hilarious gimmicks (Hornswoggle the wrestling leprechaun; Giant Gonzalez; Mae Young giving birth to a hand…). The list is endless!
6. AMERICA POWER HOUR
America has more slap-you-in-the-face kitsch in its patriotism. And god would it be epic to drink to the ol’ U.S. of A. Everything from the over-the-top singing of Lee Greenwood and “God Bless the U.S.A.” to clips from “Team America.” This would be a must-do on every Fourth of July!
7. DAYTIME TV POWER HOUR
Clips from game shows, talk shows, soap operas and local newscasts. It’s such a goldmine for unintentional comedy!
8. PRESIDENTIAL POWER HOUR
Clips about and inspired by the “leader of the free world,” the president of the United States of America. Not just famous inspirational speeches — also clips/outtakes making fun of presidents; their portrayal in movies (like Harrison Ford on Air Force One); the funny and odd (like Brad Neely’s “Washington” animation); and bits from the millions of campaign clips that are online.
9. VIDEO GAME POWER HOUR
Some people have made video game power hours before, but they have just been clips from games. This would be as much about the CULTURE of videogaming as it would be about the clips — the viral tributes and spin-off clips people have made, in addition to classic gaming clips. There’s nothing more boring than watching someone play a game, but gaming has such a rich collection of clips to pull from that this could make one epic power hour.
10. GEEK POWER HOUR
All things geeky — clips from on Star Wars and Star Trek; computer and internet humor; fantasy Lord of the Rings and Dungeons / Dragons videos; the nerdiest videogame clips; “Revenge of the Nerds” or anything that geeks (like me) like!
BONUS: 11. FETISH POWER HOUR
Sixty clips of the weirdest and most off-the-wall fetishes — foot fetishes, fruit fetishes, balloon fetishes, “furries,” S&M stuff, you name it. The interesting thing is there are a TON of non-pornographic, or only mildly pornographic fetish videos online, even on YouTube. All of them are inadvertently hilarious, because somewhere out there in this whole wide world, someone is fapping away to videos of adult men wearing baby bonnets and diapers. I think this power hour would be even more fun if it didn’t have any X-rated content in it!
That’s all I’ve got for now. If you’ve got ideas for other power hour themes, post them in the comments!

Ever since I wrote this list, I’ve been thinking about clips for these… especially the Reality TV and Wrestling hours. I think they will be my next power hour project. (Reality TV Power Hour might have to be half “Kid Nation” clips though, because there were so many golden moments…haha.)

How about a power hour of stand-up comedy bits? I think that’s why those guys do stand up in the first place…

i love the wrestling idea. would totally watch that. you’d have to throw kurt angle and the milk truck, a montage of the people getting hit by cars/truck(or limos) getting blown up, and i remember an amazing backstage promo between the rock and jericho where they stole each other’s catchphrases.

i’ve always been a fan of the 90s power hour. A lot of us feel it’s proper to extend it to a 90-minute 90s playlist. Even 90 songs are hard to choose from.

I did a power hour about a year back that had every number mentioned from 60-1 in each movie clip… It was relatively difficult until I realised how easily I could use imdb to hunt down the difficult numbers. A few were just shown in shot and not actually said, and one or two were close (for example 4.2 instead of 42) but I’d like to see if someone else has done any other “artistic” themes.

Hi,
I’m a student from Raanana (Israel).
I have to analyze how much time someone spend on internet.
There are websites which are a guilty pleasure, but there are websites which only have a visits duration of 40 seconds.
I would like to know how much time do you spend on internet (day/week/month).
Thanks for your help!

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I feel that you just could do with some percent to power the message home a little bit, but other than that, that is excellent blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.
